This year the students will be given 12 words a week to practice. They will remain on their Word Ring to practice both at home and at school. Periodically I will meet with students and remove words that they have mastered from their ring. These words are found on our Word Wall in our classroom (they are put up one week at a time) and will remain there for the year. The expectation for Grade One is not that the students can spell all of these words perfectly (although with enough exposure it is hoped that will eventually happen!) but that they are able to recognize that each word is a Word Wall word and they are able to find it on our board to copy and spell correctly in their writing activities. You will notice that each week we will focus on a different vowel sound, digraph or word family. Please encourage your child to find these words in your nightly reading, in environmental print (e.g. signs in the grocery store) and any other accidental learning that may occur.
Below you will find the first 10 weeks. Please do not expect your child to learn them all at once! We will be doing activities in the class to reinforce their learning of each group of words. (Feel free to throw in one of week 9's words during your nightly practice as those 'wh' words often tend to give grade ones a hard time!
